Los jardines
El trazado de los jardines se debe al arquitecto
francés René Carlier quien los dejó enteramente diseñados y en gran
parte realizados antes de su temprana muerte en 1722. La ejecución de
sus planes fue continuada bajo la dirección de los escultores René
Fremin y Jean Thierry y del jardinero Esteban Boutelou, todos franceses,
que consiguieron dar notable coherencia a este trazado formal
característico del estilo final de Luis XIV y de la Regencia.
El jardín inicial consistía en la zona frente al
palacio, hasta la calle de la Medianería, mientras que la zona de las
Ocho Calles, era un pequeño parque de caza. Tras su vuelta al trono,
Felipe V amplió el jardín incorporando a él las Ocho Calles y añadiendo
luego más fuentes en esa área y sus inmediaciones, siendo la de Diana la
última que encargó.
Las fuentes, realizadas en plomo para ser pintadas
imitando bronce y mármol, y las estatuas de mármol forman el conjunto
escultórico de mayor riqueza y el mejor conservado de su época. Fremin,
Thierry y Bousseau dirigieron a un equipo de escultores que llevaron a
cabo entre 1720 y 1745 este escenario animado por los espectaculares
juegos de agua de las fuentes.
